When A Hub Goes Viral. Viral Articles

The Viral Article Effect.

It's a writer's and online marketer's dream but it seldom happens. Every now and then, for no apparent reason, one of your Hubpages articles may suddenly go "viral" and get tons of hits.

Such was the case this past Earth Day when one of my Hubpages articles titled "How To Convert Your Toilet To Dual Flush" received over 8000 hits in one day. The next day I had 6000 more hits, and by the end of the week I was back down to 400 hits a day. Still not too shabby.

Why did it happen? I honestly have no idea. The Hub itself was always on page one of Google's search results and received about fifty hits a day. Then "Bam!", traffic suddenly went through the roof. I suspect that somewhere, on a popular Eco Friendly website, magazine or newspaper article, a link to my Hub about "Dual Flush Toilet Retrofit Kits" was featured and readers started following the link.

If there is anyone out there that may know what happened I would love to hear from you.

By day three I had sold over 100 of the dual flush retrofit kits through Amazon Associates. The $30 kits, which replace your toilet's old valve and flapper and save one half of the amount of water normally used during a flush for "number one".

I especially love it when the product featured in my hub can make such a big difference to the environment and save people money too. Used twice a day, at a savings of .8 gallons per flush, those 100 dual flush retrofit kits I sold would save over 58,400 gallons of water a year.

In a small way my Earth Day viral Hub helped make the world a little greener. Hubpages is such as fun place to write and it is even sweeter when you can feature a product that you believe in next to your hub.

Thanks to Hubpages for making such an easy to use and fun writing platform available to all of us. Now that the excitement of those crazy three days are over I will look forward to the day that another one of my articles goes "viral".

Update:

I have since learned why my article went viral. Yahoo News posted a story on water saving devices and in the links next to the article was one to search results for "Water Saving Devices". My hub on water saving dual flush conversion kits was among the top five search results, and this is what resulted in the viral article effect.

Congrats on your success. I'm inspired because the hub you're talking about is almost a year old. Now that is truly residual income, working at its best. :)

Congrats and thank you for sharing. My highest traffic is 500+, it's happening now and I still haven't figured out how to monetize it. :)

Sales of the dual flush toilet retrofit have cooled down. It's still a mystery to me where all those inbound links were coming from. If anyone knows, please let me know so I can thank the site.

I'm still waiting to get even a few hundred hits altogether. Maybe there is still hope.
