Craigslist Reselling, A Way To Earn A Living?

Can You Make A Living Buying and Reselling On Craigslist?
My neighbor has an interesting occupation and one that I am interested in trying myself. He makes his living buying things and reselling them on Craigslist after he fixes them. For those of you who may have been living under a rock for the past few years, Craigslist is now the single most popular way to buy and sell used personal goods in the United States. It has replaced the newspaper classified section as the main place to find used items for sale and to place ads for things you want to get rid of.
How My Friend Makes A Living Buying and Selling Things On Craigslist
One way that some people make money on Craigslist is to buy things cheaply and then turn around and sell them for a higher price. Nothing is done to the item to add more value to it. Used car dealers are experts at making money on Craigslist like this. Other people look for valuable items that may need minor repair, then fix them, and turn around and sell them again on Craigslist. This is what my neighbor does as his full time job. I'm not sure what is annual income is, but he is apparently doing quite well. His specialty is used lawnmowers and lawn equipment. He searches Craigslist every hour of the day for bargains on used lawnmowers, weed eaters, edgers, etc.. Once he has found several that he is interested in, he contacts the owners, then makes a sweep of the city to pick them up in the most efficient manner. He also finds old lawnmowers in the "free" section" of Craigslist. In addition to searching the ads placed on Craigslist by others, he places his own ads such as "lawnmower wanted", and "I buy old lawn mowers".
My neighbor is making a living buying and reselling things on Craigslist and his only investment to get started was the money spent on a course in small engine repair at our local community college. His shop is in his garage, and consists of a nice workbench, air compressor, shop vac, and other items. He stores his lawnmowers out of sight in the backyard and in his storage shed. Though we have a homeowner's association, nobody seems to care about his home based business since he does not make any noise or create an eyesore.
Some people now deliver old lawnmowers to my neighbor for free, since he has gained a reputation in the town as a lawnmower repairman and recycler.
What Other Things Could You Buy and Resell On Craigslist?
I've tried to think of some things that a person working from home might be able to buy on Craigslist , then fix up and resell. Things such as antiques, barbecue grills, kitchen appliances, exercise equipment, scooters, bicycles and garden equipment all might be good things to try. The key to success, according to my friend, is to find a niche item, learn as much about fixing that item as you can, and then search them out on Craigslist to buy, repair and resell. I think it might be a great way to make a living. I'll get back to you with another Hub if I ever try it!

This is a great idea. We sold a canoe on Craigslist quickly, but we did have the problem with people making offers that were so cheap it was crazy. I'm sure they wanted to resell it. In the end we got the price we wanted.
Hi doodlebugs - A worthy artice and very well written, as one would expect from a fine poet and musician...
I bought a big oxygen concentrator from an ad on Craigslist. this is a gadget that ordinarily costs about $2,000 new. It separates oxygen from room air and delivers it at about 95% concentration at around 4 to 5 liters a minute. No oxygen tanks to buy and store. Instead of a couple thousand bucks, it cost me $75. I took it to a professional for servicing. They changed out some important parts inside that were still under warranty. Cost me $60 plus the first $75 and I have a "new" machine to use when I need it. I could easily resell it for a nice profit if I wanted to.

I respect all people with that enterprising hustling spirit. Good for your friend. Here in NYC hustling up some cash has made so many of us entrepreneurs.
About a year ago I sold some things on craigslist - like a guitar for example - and it sold instantly. About 5 people responded and one guy was even in his car heading my way. I avoided all the hassle of dealing with ebay - didn't have to share the cut with them or anyone - and the deal(s) was done.
There is always a way to make some money if you refuse to be a dependent slob. By the way I wrote a hub about how people in NYC are earning extra cash. One way is dog walking. In fact one young man who people claimed was kind of slow - is the best in the neighborhood - has been doing it since he was in HS and must earn over $500. per week (beats having door after door slammed in his face).
